Selkie – Friday Fictioneers

It’s that time again, and here is my contribution to Friday Fictioneers. If you’d like to take part please see Rochelle’s page and she’ll show you what to do πŸ™‚

Thanks for today’s photo prompt from Douglas M. MacIlroyΒ I love this picture!

The animal rose upward. Pointed teeth glistened in the late afternoon sun.

Tilly gasped and reached out.

β€˜Careful,’ said the old woman. β€˜If you touch one, you’ll never be the same.’

Tilly frowned. β€˜It’s only a statue.’

The woman smiled. β€˜Legend says they’re the guardians of the water.’ She pointed to Loch Lomond, shining sapphire in the distance. β€˜They swim during the night, returning to human form during the day.’

β€˜It’s just a story,’ said Tilly. She touched its metal head. Β

The woman got back to her feet and patted Tilly on the shoulder.

β€˜Yes it is,’ she said.

  1. Tilly is a great character. I’m sure there will be great adventure in her future. This is a great take on the prompt, and I also love the picture.

  2. Nice character work here, primarily through the dialogue – i get an impression of them both. I also get a sense that the Old lady knows more than she’s letting on…

  3. Wow. I can’t believe you did that in 100 words! That’s always my biggest issue…trying to keep the word count down. You are a master storyteller!
